Austin Fire Department Chief Joel G. Baker is set to retire on August 31. His last day in the office will be August 11, after which he will be unavailable.

The city has not provided a reason for his departure. Tom Vocke will take over as acting fire chief, effective September 1. Baker has been with the Austin Fire Department since December 2018, when he joined after retiring from a fire department in Atlanta.

Further details about the change in leadership and the search for a new fire chief can be found through the city or the Austin Current.
