The West Sixth Street shooting in Austin claimed the lives of two young victims and injured three others. Police and the FBI are investigating the motive as tributes grow across the city.
In a tragic incident early Sunday, two young individuals lost their lives, while three others sustained critical injuries in a mass shooting outside a bar on West Sixth Street. The event has disrupted Austin’s entertainment district and led to a collaborative investigation by local and federal authorities.
The Austin Police Department has confirmed the identities of the victims as 21-year-old Savitha Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington. A shooting incident took place shortly before 2 a.m. in a bustling nightlife area of the city. Authorities have reported that they may soon remove one of the injured individuals from life support.
Authorities are still working to uncover the motive behind the gunman's decision to open fire. Although officials have emphasized that they have not yet established a motive, the FBI is investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism.
“It would be premature to make any declarations regarding the motive behind that incident,” stated Alex Doran, the acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio field office. “We aim to ensure that our information is completely accurate.”
Authorities have confirmed the suspect's identity as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne. Officials reported that he was shot and killed by officers who responded to the scene. The FBI is currently conducting a comprehensive review of thousands of hours of surveillance footage and interviewing over 150 witnesses. Authorities have reported that they are currently examining images and items found at the suspect's residence as part of an ongoing investigation. However, investigators have yet to establish any links to international incidents.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis described the situation as “complicated,” indicating that investigators are actively working to uncover the factors that contributed to the outbreak of violence.
Davis expressed deep sympathy, stating, “I cannot imagine the grief, pain, and loss this family is feeling today.” “Finding answers remains our top priority.”
Harrington, a student at Texas Tech University, is being remembered by family and friends as a “beloved son, brother and friend,” celebrated for his kindness and sense of humor, as reported by CBS News. The University of Texas at Austin has confirmed that Shan was a member of its community. In a statement, the university's president expressed that the campus is "grieved" by this loss.
A memorial outside the West Sixth Street bar is expanding, with residents placing flowers, candles, and handwritten notes in remembrance.
“These are young individuals who have tragically lost their lives,” stated Manuel Tavera, a local worker. “Regrettably, an individual has ended their life.”
Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of the suspect. Authorities have announced the release of body camera footage later this week.
The inquiry continues to progress.
