Book lovers across Austin have multiple opportunities to celebrate reading and writing this weekend, with two events drawing crowds from across Central Texas.
On Saturday, StoryAssembly hosted its “School-tastic Book Fair for Grown Ups” at the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex, offering a nostalgic take on childhood book fairs with a modern twist.
The event featured local independent booksellers, themed vendors, and activities designed to recreate the experience of elementary school book fairs—minus the academic pressure. Attendees browsed books, participated in retro-themed activities, and enjoyed music from the 1980s and 1990s.
Organizers encouraged visitors to “forget your adult problems and regress back to simpler times,” highlighting the event’s focus on nostalgia and community.
Meanwhile, downtown Austin hosted the third annual Greater Austin Book Festival at the Austin Central Library as part of Texas Writers Month.
The free festival ran from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and featured panels, workshops, and author meet-and-greets across the library’s six floors. Programming was open to all ages and included sessions on genres such as science fiction, romance, and children’s literature, as well as practical workshops on publishing and writing techniques.
Featured speakers included Chris Barton, Austin Kleon and Bret Anthony Johnston, along with poet Usha Akella and dozens of other regional writers.
Organizers said they designed the event to connect readers and writers while supporting Austin’s growing literary community. Sessions such as “Choose Your Own Publishing Adventure” and “Writing Ain’t My Day Job” focused on navigating the publishing world and balancing creative work with other careers.
The festival also included family-friendly programming, from children’s author events to interactive activities in the library’s youth spaces.
The Austin Public Library and its nonprofit partner, the Library Foundation, said the event is part of a broader effort to position the Central Library as a hub for cultural programming.
Additional events are planned in the coming weeks, including a summer kickoff celebration featuring educational activities and community engagement.
Together, the weekend’s events highlight Austin’s expanding literary scene, offering both nostalgic entertainment and opportunities for aspiring writers to connect and learn.
