A group of Texas House Democrats made their way back to Austin on Monday for the second special legislative session, concluding a two-week walkout and reestablishing a quorum that enables the House to continue its proceedings.
Governor Greg Abbott summoned lawmakers back shortly after the conclusion of the initial special session on Friday. Redistricting continues to dominate discussions, as Republicans are poised to push forward a strategy to revise Texas congressional maps in anticipation of the upcoming midterm elections.
Despite the absence of over two dozen House Democrats when the session began, a sufficient number of members were in attendance to proceed with legislative activities.
House Speaker Dustin Burrows delivered a unifying message from the dais, encouraging lawmakers to progress together despite recent political disagreements. “It is my duty at this moment to ensure that this quorum remains intact and to foster an environment of order and respect until the task is completed,” Burrows stated. “Discussion is encouraged, but insults and personal attacks are unacceptable.”
A coalition of Democrats had been residing in suburban Chicago for almost two weeks to impede the GOP’s redistricting initiative. “We were engaged in a strategic game of chess while they were occupied with a simpler game of tic-tac-toe,” remarked Rep. Jolanda Jones, D-Houston. “We successfully halted their progress. It seemed like a bold and audacious decision. It was impressive, and I’m proud of our achievements.
On Saturday, demonstrations erupted across the country, united under the theme “Fight the Trump Takeover National Day of Action,” in response to former President Donald Trump’s advocacy for Republican-led redistricting initiatives.
Following the adjournment on Monday, Rep. Gene Wu, D-Houston, who chairs the House Democratic Caucus, announced that Democrats will now pivot their approach to the judicial system. “Our immediate focus should be on expediting this process to ensure the court can intervene swiftly,” Wu stated.
