On Thursday, officials from Travis County declared that full recreational access to Lake Travis has been restored after several weeks of limited access due to significant flooding that occurred earlier this month.
The lake faced limitations due to a county disaster declaration, which temporarily halted all recreational activities to prioritize public safety in light of increasing water levels and debris issues.
Following significant rainfall upstream, floodgates were opened, resulting in excessive runoff from the Colorado River into the lake, which caused a rise in water levels and prompted the initial closure. While the lake saw a partial reopening just a week after its closure, access was still restricted in specific zones, especially around the Cow Creek mouth, due to ongoing safety concerns.
On Thursday, Travis County Judge Andy Brown made an official update to the county’s disaster declaration, permitting recreational activities throughout the entire lake and removing the final restrictions. A post on the Travis County government’s social media channels conveyed the announcement.
In light of the reopening, county officials are advising boaters, swimmers, and other lake users to exercise caution. Lingering dangers, such as hidden debris, swift currents, and fluctuating water conditions, could continue to pose safety challenges in some regions of the lake.
"The lake is now accessible for recreational activities, but officials urge everyone to remain cautious and stay informed about the conditions before venturing out," stated county representatives.
Lake Travis, a popular destination for boating, fishing, and swimming, is crucial to the area's tourism and outdoor recreation economy. The temporary closure was part of a series of urgent measures taken by Travis County in early July to address the impacts of extensive flooding resulting from heavy rainfall throughout Central Texas.
