Officials have interrogated and subsequently released an individual considered a person of interest following the deadly shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at an event held on Wednesday at Utah Valley University, according to state and federal authorities. Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, has passed away due to his injuries, as confirmed by various statements and reports.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on X that “the individual in custody has been released following an interrogation by law enforcement,” while noting that the investigation continues. Previous statements from authorities indicated that an individual was in custody. Authorities have yet to disclose a motive, and no charges have been brought forth at this time.
Officials from the university reported that a shot was discharged around 12:10 p.m. local time during Kirk's speech to the audience at an outdoor event on campus. A cellphone video recorded a solitary gunshot followed by a frantic rush as onlookers sought safety. All campus buildings were cleared, and classes for the remainder of the day were canceled.
“Today marks a somber moment for our state.” “Today marks a sorrowful moment for our country,” stated Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, referring to the killing as a “political assassination.”
Kirk, a father of two, participated in a college tour titled “The American Comeback,” which has attracted significant and frequently divided audiences. He gained recognition by energizing young conservatives via Turning Point USA and enhancing Trump’s engagement with the youth. Trump shared the news of Kirk’s passing on social media.
Texas perspective: The incident sent shockwaves throughout Texas, where several of TPUSA's most engaged chapters are located. Governor Greg Abbott expressed his sorrow over the loss of Charlie Kirk, stating, “Cecilia and I are heartbroken by the assassination and passing of Charlie Kirk… This senseless act of violence has no place in America.” Student groups have come together to hold remembrances: Texas A&M’s TPUSA chapter is set to host a vigil on Thursday night. Meanwhile, organizers from Texas Tech and West Texas leaders have announced plans for a gathering on Wednesday.”
Authorities are calling on the community to refrain from making assumptions and to provide any information as they review footage and survey the vicinity of the campus location. Initial information regarding potential suspects and arrests evolved throughout the day, highlighting the dynamic nature of the investigation. Authorities have not specified when more information will be available.
