Because of the dangerous heat wave in Central Texas, Austin FC has moved its Wednesday night game against Atlanta United back by 30 minutes. The game at Q2 Stadium will now start at 8 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. as planned.
Forecasters say this week could see temperatures that break records, so local officials and Austin FC leadership are putting a lot of emphasis on public safety. Starting on Monday, the National Weather Service sent out several heat warnings. On Tuesday, Austin and Travis County leaders put out a joint alert.
Eric Carter, who is in charge of emergency planning for Travis County, said, "We're used to hot days, but we don't always treat heat as an emergency." "We want to make people aware of this danger."
Andy Loughnane, President of Austin FC, said the field was built for hot weather. "The roof keeps the sun off, and we left four corners open to let more air flow," he explained.
Other features that help keep you cool are mesh seats that let air flow, misting stations, and shaded places that can be moved around during games. Fans can also fill up their water bottles for free at three hydration spots.
Loughnane said, "About 20% of our games have been played in 90-degree or higher weather." "This is something our fans already know."
The City of Austin still runs several cooling centers and has issued information on how to stay healthy in the heat. People are asked to stay hydrated, limit their time spent outside, and check on friends who might be at risk.
