As a cold front sweeps through Texas this week, a recent national ranking shows the Lone Star State remains a top choice for warm-weather winter getaways.
A study published on Tuesday, Oct. 28, by WalletHub reveals that Austin has secured the No. 3 spot on the list of 2025’s “Best Warm-Weather Winter Destinations.” The Texas capital received excellent ratings for its pleasant winter weather, vibrant entertainment options, affordability, and diverse outdoor activities.
The city known for its vibrant music scene achieved an overall rating of nearly 68, just behind Las Vegas, which claimed the top spot with a score of 74.33, and San Diego, which secured second place with a score of 70.47.
Texas made a strong showing in the Top 10. Dallas secured the fourth position with a score of 67.35, while Houston came in sixth with 65.13. San Antonio finished in ninth place with a score of 60.37.
WalletHub analyzed 70 of the most popular metro areas in the U.S., evaluating them on 37 factors, including travel expenses, weather, safety, and local attractions. Cities that enjoy milder winter temperatures and offer easy access to outdoor activities ranked better in the evaluations.
Austin, celebrated for its lively music scene, scenic outdoor trails, and dynamic culinary offerings, earned notably high ratings for affordability and entertainment options. The city's blend of sunny weather and vibrant culture positions it as a top choice for those seeking an affordable escape from winter's chill.
Among the leading warm-weather spots were Phoenix at fifth, Tampa at seventh, San Francisco at eighth, and Los Angeles, rounding out the top ten.
For those seeking snowy adventures rather than sunny escapes, WalletHub has unveiled a related ranking for the “Best Cold-Weather Winter Destinations.” Leading the rankings was Chicago, with Atlanta in second and Washington, D.C., in third.
Texas's impressive performance in the warm-weather rankings highlights its increasing allure as a travel destination, even in the winter season. Austin’s picturesque lakeside views, San Antonio’s charming River Walk, and Houston’s vibrant culinary offerings keep attracting visitors throughout the year—whether they’re seeking live music, delicious barbecue, or a respite from the winter cold.
