In a tragic incident of domestic violence, longtime Denton County Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell is currently recovering in the hospital after being stabbed in her North Texas home early Monday morning. Her husband, Fred Mitchell, did not survive the attack.

Authorities report that the couple’s 23-year-old grandson, Mitchell Reinacher, is currently in custody and facing charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

At approximately 4 a.m., officers from the Lewisville Police Department arrived at the Mitchells’ home on Springwood Drive, discovering both victims suffering from multiple stab wounds. Reinacher was taken into custody without any complications at the location.

Fred Mitchell was declared dead at a local hospital, whereas Commissioner Mitchell is in stable condition and is anticipated to make a recovery. She has been a prominent figure in Texas politics, serving on the Denton County Commissioners Court since 2000 and previously holding the distinction of being the first Black mayor of Lewisville.

Texans from all political backgrounds are sharing their grief and unity. “Cecilia and I are deeply saddened,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “Our thoughts are with Commissioner Mitchell for a swift recovery, and we stand in solidarity with Denton County during this difficult period.”

Local officials and residents are shocked by the news. “The City of Lewisville is keeping our Commissioner in our thoughts and prayers,” stated Mayor TJ Gilmore. “Her leadership has impacted countless individuals throughout North Texas.”

The assault has loomed over a close-knit Texas community recognized for its dedication to public service. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specifics surrounding the violent incident; however, they indicate that the investigation is still in progress.

As Mitchell embarks on her journey to recovery, Denton County will pay tribute to her husband’s life and legacy in the days ahead.
