Texas students can apply to college for free this week. The first Free Institution Application Week in the state allows residents to apply to any in-state public institution or university for free from Oct. 13–19.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) program removes a financial barrier, making higher education more affordable and accessible. First-time college students, transfer students, and returning students applying to Texas public undergraduate programs are eligible for a fee waiver.
Candidates must submit their materials through ApplyTexas, the official statewide college application portal. The waiver window is 12:00 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, to 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.
Senate Bill 2231, passed earlier this year, permanently designates the second whole week of October as Free College Application Week.
Gov. Greg Abbott called the new project a prudent investment in the workforce. Abbott stated, “Texas prioritizes opportunities for students to pursue the best education they need to succeed in high-demand, good-paying jobs after graduation.” By supporting our students today, we strengthen Texas tomorrow.”
Many high school seniors can quickly accumulate savings. The majority of students apply to five to ten universities and pay between $60 and $75 per school, according to official estimates.
Texas Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser said that Free Application Week helps more students enter college.
Only Texas residents can apply to public college and university undergraduate programs with the waiver. International students, out-of-state applicants, and graduate students are exempt from this requirement.
