This weekend, the weather in Central Texas will change dramatically. On Sunday, temperatures will rise into the 90s in the Austin area before a strong cold front brings high winds and a sharp decline in temperature.
As long as southerly winds keep pushing warmer air into the area, tonight will stay cooler than the last two nights. Overnight, it will be clear, and the low temperature will drop into the 50s.
The weather will get warmer across the area on Saturday, with highs in the mid-80s in the afternoon. Any clouds that show up in the morning should quickly go away, leaving bright skies for the rest of the day.
On Sunday, a dry line moves from the Hill Country into the Austin metro area, which makes things very different. The system will dry out the air, letting temperatures soar into the 90s. This will be the hottest day of the year so far and the first time Austin has hit 90 degrees in 2026.
On Sunday evening, just after the hottest part of the day, a strong cold front will move south through Central Texas.
Strong wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph will come with the front on Sunday evening and overnight. Some parts of the area might lose power because of the winds.
Dry air and strong winds will also increase the likelihood of wildfires in Central Texas on Sunday afternoon and evening. Some places may no longer have burn bans, but officials are still telling people not to light fires outside.
As the cold front comes through on Sunday night, temperatures will drop quickly. By early Monday morning, overnight lows will have dropped into the 30s. In many areas, wind chills could drop below freezing.
Monday will still be cool compared to how warm it was over the weekend. The highs will only get to the 50s in the afternoon, and they will go down again on Monday night.
Forecasters say that Monday night and early Tuesday morning will be the coldest days of the month. Lows will drop into the 30s across the area. In some places of the Hill Country, it may freeze over in patches.
The weather will get better again during the week after the short cold spell.
By Tuesday afternoon, temperatures should be in the 60s. Thereafter, it will steadily warm up through the middle of the week, with highs in Central Texas hitting the 70s and 80s.
