Progress on the Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements project in Austin is moving forward, with city officials projecting a substantial completion by December of this year.

This multi-faceted project, which aims to enhance connectivity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists, is a key component of the city's broader efforts to improve its trail system.

The centerpiece of the project is a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Lady Bird Lake. This bridge will connect the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, creating a safer and more accessible route beneath South Pleasant Valley Road.

A July update from the city reports significant progress, including the installation of 11 of the 12 bridge deck spans. There is a planter located beneath the deck and a camping deterrent situated near the Holly Peninsula connection. Pedestrian sidewalks east of the underpass have also been completed.

Crews are now focused on various finishing tasks to prepare the new route for public use. Current work includes installing grouted flagstone in drainage areas, adding handrails along the bridge, and building columns for a pergola that will cover a new plaza. The project also incorporates a strong aesthetic and environmental focus, with plans to install a permanent irrigation system for new landscaping and plant trees and greenery. A unique ceramic mosaic tile artwork is being fabricated and will be installed in the underpass area.

Upon completion, the project will not only provide a safer passage for trail users but also introduce new public art and native landscaping, further beautifying the area.

City officials have consistently stated that the project remains on track for its December deadline, with regular updates to be shared as the final stages of construction are completed.
