Authorities are advising shoppers to avoid specific frozen shrimp available at Walmart following the detection of radioactive contamination in imports from Indonesia.

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration announced that shrimp from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), which was sent through four U.S. ports — Los Angeles, Miami, Savannah, Georgia, and Houston — has been found to contain Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope associated with an increased cancer risk over extended exposure.

A sample of breaded shrimp brought in by the company tested positive for the isotope, leading the FDA to prohibit all BMS Foods shrimp products from entering the nation. Officials have confirmed that the contaminated product was not made available for sale; however, Walmart has been instructed to recall additional frozen shrimp sourced from BMS that had already arrived in stores.

The products being recalled consist of Walmart’s Great Value Frozen Raw EZ Peel Tail-On Farm-Raised White Vannamei Shrimp, which are packaged in two-pound bags and have a best-by date of March 15, 2027. Walmart has announced the recall on its website, confirming that stores across 13 states, including Texas, are affected.

“The agency stated in its update that it will persist in collaborating with the industry to track all affected products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati throughout the supply chain, aiming to collect as much information as possible and take necessary actions.”

Walmart announced it is taking swift action to prioritize consumer safety. “Walmart and Sam’s Club prioritize the well-being and safety of our customers and members,” the company stated. “Should a product recall occur, we act promptly to prevent the item from being available for purchase and ensure its removal from our stores and clubs.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights that Cesium-137 is found in the environment as a result of nuclear weapons testing and certain industrial applications. Although limited exposure presents little danger, significant or extended contact may elevate the risk of cancer and, in extreme situations, result in fatality.

The FDA highlighted that there have been no reported illnesses associated with the shrimp. Officials are advising consumers to inspect their freezers and refrain from consuming the impacted product.

Shoppers have the option to bring back recalled bags to Walmart for a refund or dispose of them properly.
