Governor Greg Abbott launched Texas's emergency response on Monday as a severe storm system is expected to impact northwest and southwest Texas on Tuesday night. He warned of potential flash flooding and dangerous conditions in several regions.
A statement from the governor’s office reveals that the storm system is projected to traverse the state, with the highest risk of flash flooding expected in northwest Texas before possibly advancing toward North Texas. Heavy downpours could raise flooding issues in southeast Texas.
“Texas is closely monitoring the situation as severe weather patterns move across our state,” Abbott stated in a written announcement. “We stand ready to deploy all necessary resources to protect communities from anticipated flash flooding and severe rainfall.”
The state's emergency resources include specialized rescue boat squads and helicopters focused on flood rescues, as well as agricultural support designed to meet the needs of livestock and crops, along with medical assistance teams prepared to respond swiftly.
Personnel are ready to monitor road conditions, power outages, natural gas supply, and water quality, including air, wastewater, and drinking water systems.
Abbott urged residents in the storm's path to follow the advice of state and local officials and remain vigilant for weather updates. “Heed the guidance provided by state and local officials,” the governor remarked. “Multiple organizations are prepared to meet the needs of impacted communities.”
The Texas Division of Emergency Management is collaborating with multiple state agencies to ensure a rapid deployment of resources should conditions worsen. Officials are prepared to mobilize additional rescue teams and logistical support if the flooding situation worsens considerably.
A new storm system is on the way, separate from Tropical Storm Erin, which forecasters predict will bypass Texas entirely.
Authorities have warned that the likelihood of heavy rainfall and flooding could persist through the middle of the week, depending on the system's path. Residents in low-lying areas should prepare for potential evacuation orders and avoid driving on flooded roads.
The National Weather Service has issued an alert stating that the potential for flash flooding remains a significant concern overnight Tuesday through Wednesday, particularly in rural and low-drainage areas of northwest Texas.
The governor’s office has announced that updates will be provided as the situation progresses and has encouraged Texans to prepare their emergency kits and evacuation plans.
