On Monday, May 5, Burnet Middle School experienced three consecutive safety holds due to a series of incidents, which included a gun-related social media post and a medical emergency, as reported by Austin ISD.
A lockdown was initiated at approximately 9:45 a.m. following reports of a student sharing a photo of a firearm on social media platforms. School resource officers successfully located the student and confiscated an unloaded firearm.
“We commend the student who reported the incident and our officers for their swift action in ensuring campus safety,” stated a spokesperson for AISD. Authorities encourage vigilance among the public with the message, “If you see something, say something.”
At Austin ISD schools, hold has been implemented, necessitating the clearance of hallways and requiring students to stay in classrooms. This measure allows for ongoing instruction while administrators investigate the matter.
A second hold was initiated at the school shortly thereafter, prompted by a medical emergency concerning a school community member. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived and transported the individual for medical care. The district has chosen to withhold further information regarding the individuals' privacy.
Later in the day, a third hold was initiated following a report from another student regarding a separate social media post that depicted an individual with a firearm inside a vehicle. The AISD Police conducted an investigation and concluded that the weapon was not associated with any student from Burnet Middle School.
All three incidents concluded without any physical harm to students or staff, allowing the school to return to normal operations.
AISD has underscored the critical role of student and community awareness in ensuring the safety of its campuses. The district has urged the community to report any suspicious behavior to the Austin ISD Police at 512-414-1703.
The Austin Independent School District has yet to disclose any decisions regarding potential disciplinary measures for the student implicated in the recent on-campus gun incident.
