Austin ISD is making a notable advancement in promoting student wellness by initiating the construction of a new mental health center on the Martin Middle School campus in East Austin.

This week marks the commencement of construction for the final phase of the school’s ongoing modernization project.

The current phase of upgrades includes significant improvements to infrastructure, such as new HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. A key feature of this initiative is the proposed establishment of a student mental health center, which aligns with the district's comprehensive strategy to address the increasing emotional and psychological needs of its students.

Dr. LaShanda Lewis, the executive director of Crisis and Mental Counseling at AISD, announced that the district currently manages several centers of this nature, highlighting that the new facility at Martin will serve as a crucial enhancement to their services. The newly designed center aims to create a classroom-like environment that prioritizes comfort and warmth. It will include areas designated for group counseling sessions as well as private, one-on-one meetings with licensed mental health professionals.

Lewis highlighted how the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored and exacerbated the demand for these services. “Students who are not emotionally and mentally well will struggle to perform at their best in the classroom, which is essential for their academic success,” she stated.

A new center has been established to provide a safe and welcoming environment for students, ensuring they have access to timely mental health support. The AISD views this initiative as a potential model for replication in additional schools moving forward.

The modernization project at Martin Middle School, which includes the addition of a new mental health center, is expected to be completed by fall 2027. The district is steadfast in its commitment to enhancing mental health services and prioritizing student wellness throughout its campuses.
