During the 89th Texas Legislature, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick showcased his political influence by advocating for a contentious ban on THC. This move has sparked significant backlash, with critics pointing to perceived hypocrisy and errors in the legislative process.

During a recent press conference aimed at advocating for a ban on legal THC products, including cannabis gummies and beverages, which represent a $8 billion industry and provide jobs for 53,000 Texans, Patrick expressed strong opposition when questioned about the rationale for not regulating THC like alcohol. “Are you out of your mind?” he exclaimed, cautioning that THC could “destroy mental states” and even “lead to death.”

Critics have swiftly highlighted a notable contradiction: firearms, rather than THC, represent the primary cause of death among children in Texas. Patrick has consistently opposed any measures aimed at gun control, permitting both unlicensed and untrained individuals to openly and concealed carry firearms. In a continuing plea for change, parents of victims from school shootings have consistently called for gun reform, a request that has gone unacknowledged by Patrick.

His campaign against THC is aligned with a larger initiative supported by Christian nationalist donors, who have financially backed Patrick's efforts to implement far-right policies. In his role as Senate leader, Patrick wields significant influence over the legislative process, deciding which bills are brought to a vote and exerting pressure on even his Republican colleagues to align with his agenda, lest they risk political isolation.

In 2024, Patrick leveraged his substantial $33 million campaign fund to oust dissenting House Republicans, successfully installing loyalists in their place. This strategic move resulted in the enactment of controversial legislation, including prohibitions on gender-affirming care and a bill that redefined gender in public records.

Indicators of a downturn are becoming increasingly apparent. In a significant procedural misstep, Patrick adjourned the Senate rather than opting for a recess, effectively derailing multiple far-right bills in the process. Once recognized as a master of legislative procedure, Patrick is now increasingly dependent on his staff and has been observed losing his temper with critics.

Patrick's once firm hold on Texas politics appears to be weakening, potentially leading to significant implications for the rights and freedoms of Texans.
